Head Teacher Governor

Mrs S Sankey
(Term of office: duration in post)

Mrs S Sankey-  I have been a teacher at Engayne since 2002 and have been the Head teacher here since September 2012. I have previously worked in Cornwall, Devon and Southampton.

I am from Cornwall and often return for holidays to see my family. If I get free time, which isn’t often, I enjoy sports and reading.  My children play rugby so I am often standing on a cold touchline on Sunday mornings. As a mother of two teenage boys I completely understand the importance of the foundations of learning.

Our Engayne motto is ‘Excellence and Enjoyment’. I believe children thrive in a learning environment where they can have fun, be children in a changing world and succeed academically and in the arts/ sport.

Since becoming the Head teacher and with the Governing board we have embedded forest school where the children can learn outside, built two new garden rooms to utilise space and an outdoor stage, set up a programme to train teachers across Havering with the TES, prioritised play at lunchtimes through OPAL and wellbeing of children and staff. We continually strive to improve our school for our children.

Mrs N Francis– I was originally appointed as a parent governor in 2015 when both my children were at Engayne, once they had moved onto secondary school, I was then appointed by the Governing Body in November 2023. Both my children gained a valuable education and are now succeeding at secondary school.

My responsibilities for Engayne’s Governing Body are Chair of the Pupils and Curriculum sub-committee and also Vice Chair of the full Governing Body. My working career has always been in education, with over 24 years of teaching. I have worked  across many diverse London Boroughs including Newham, Thurrock and in more recent years, Havering. Throughout my career I have had many middle management positions as Head of Department, Head of Year and Key Stage Leader.

Like every parent, we want the very best for our children. We want them to be happy, responsible, confident, and respectful and be able to persevere with their life at Engayne and beyond and being able to reach their full potential. I trust that as part of the Governing Body I am able to work with all stakeholders to support this.

Mr S Nicholls – I am now retired from a long career in banking where I worked in a wide variety of management roles covering all areas of the finance. I was involved in developing and delivering professional training courses including the development of professional examinations. In addition I was a parent governor at Gaynes School for a number of years.
I have been a committee member of Upminster Park Rovers Junior Football Club for over 15 years and have been one of its trustees since its conversion to a charity. As a Local Authority Governor I hope my skills and experience will help and support Engayne’s governing body.

Professor A Moss – I’m a Professor of Addictive Behaviour Science and the Director of Education and Student Experience, in the School of Applied Sciences at London South Bank University, where I also completed my BSc and PhD in psychology. As an active researcher in the field of addictive behaviour and public health, I have a particular focus on developing education-based interventions to prevent alcohol-related harms, and am a Trustee for Alcohol Change UK, who lead the Dry January campaign. My research interests are driven by an interest in helping to reduce health inequalities. I have extensive experience of working with local authorities across the UK to design, implement, and evaluate interventions to improve public health (not just related to addictive behaviours, but also in areas related to diet, nutrition and the advertising of unhealthy foods), amongst a range of age groups.

I have worked in further and higher education for almost 20 years, and have a passion for widening participation in education, and ensuring that we promote inclusivity in the broadest sense. Having previously worked for several years as a special educational needs tutor for children with autism, and in my role as a Governor for Corbets Tey School and Director of Routes 4 Life (a post-19 SEND provision), I have seen first-hand the transformative impact of education, especially when children with special educational needs are given the right support early on in their development. I hope that my skills and background are of some use to the Governing Board for Engayne School, and I look forward to supporting the Engayne community!

Mrs A Divall – I have worked in Havering since I qualified as a teacher over 14 years ago and I have worked in several different schools in the local authority. I currently hold a senior leadership position in my school with responsibility for EYFS (children of reception and nursery age). I have always loved my job and found it a privilege to teach such young, amazing children and to enable them to progress in every aspect of their development.  I have had responsibility for many different curriculum areas during my career, as well as development of outdoor learning and becoming a designated safeguarding lead.  I have mentored many students and early career teachers and work closely alongside external experts in Havering in relation to SEND, safeguarding, moderation and quality assurance.

I am very pleased to be appointed as a Governor at Engayne. I appreciate the high expectations and standards set for the pupils by the school teachers and leaders. I have one child already attending Engayne, and my youngest is due to start in September ’24. I would like to support the school to continue to be successful and I hope that my skills and knowledge will benefit the Engayne community.  It is a pleasure to work alongside such dedicated people.  The opportunities that the pupils benefit from in the well thought out curriculum are brilliant and I truly believe extras such as OPAL and social action projects make Engayne a special place for pupils to attend.

Ms A Ahti – I have two sons at Engayne Primary school and in February 2023 I was elected as a parent governor. This is a role I am very excited about!

My career has focused on supporting vulnerable people, most of it working on policies supporting children at all stages of Youth Justice System. This is from prevention and diversion to children who have committed offences and end up sentenced and in custody. I have also worked in Children’s Social Care and I have a great understanding of the role schools have in safeguarding children.

In all my roles I have seen the importance of education and schools and what can happen to children who do not have access to them. Children only get one shot at education and this can have an enormous impact on their ability to get on with life.

We are very lucky with the facilities Engayne offer. We have a forest school area, OPAL, 2 libraries and a swimming pool. Our children should have the opportunity to learn in a safe environment, make friends and enjoy their time at Engayne to have the best possible start to their educational journey and progress to the next stage of their life with confidence and optimism. I am keen to work with the Governing board and the school to ensure all children will thrive to best of their abilities.

Mr A Moreland – I have been teaching for 12 years and currently work at Harris Academy Ockendon where I have worked for the last 8 years. My daughter has just started reception at Engayne and is enjoying it immensely. As a parent, it has been fantastic to see the progress she has made so quickly.

I currently work as achievement leader and have responsibility for transition from primary to secondary education. I have also spent time on leadership, leading on behaviour and culture across the academy. I am passionate about supporting students and schools to create well rounded individuals. My last cohort not only achieved the best results the academy had in its history but perhaps most importantly, they became well rounded young adults, who are now well prepared for their next steps.  I am incredibly proud of their achievements and I am looking forward to working with the entire Engayne community in helping our students feel confident academically and socially as they move up the key stages and into the next phases of their young lives.

Being parent governor at Engayne will provide me with opportunities to ensure that the transition from year six into year seven is purposeful and happy for all students, a stage that sometimes for families and students can seem far bigger than it needs to be. I am looking forward to sharing my skillset to aid the school in this area and others as my term progresses. I have completed an NPQLBC (leading behaviour and culture) and am currently doing my NPQSL (senior leadership). I have a previous career in sales and as a result I am looking forward to working with all stakeholders (internal & external) to ensure students at Engayne continue to receive world class provision.
